How to Maintain Your Hair Color Between Salon Visits
The Honest Truth About Making Your Color Last
You just left the salon. Your color looks incredible. Now the question is how long you can keep it that way.
Here is what we tell every client on their way out the door. The real stuff that actually makes a difference between color that holds and color that fades in two weeks.
The Biggest Color Killer: Your Shampoo
If you only change one thing, change your shampoo. Most drugstore shampoos contain sulfates, harsh detergents that strip hair color faster than anything else in your routine. Switch to a sulfate-free, color-safe formula. It does not need to be expensive. It just needs to be sulfate-free.
Ask your colorist what they actually use. That recommendation is worth more than anything you will find in a Google search.
Hot Water Is Not Your Friend
We know. Nobody wants a cold shower. But hot water opens the hair cuticle and lets color molecules escape. You do not have to suffer through an ice-cold rinse. Just turn the temperature down for the last minute when you rinse out your conditioner. Lukewarm is fine. Your color will hold noticeably longer.
Hard Water: The Hidden Color Thief
This is something we talk about with clients constantly, because it is a real issue in South Jersey. Hard water deposits minerals on your hair over time, and those minerals oxidize and turn color brassy. Most people notice it around the six to eight week mark. That warm, unwanted tone that was not there when you left the salon. A clarifying shampoo once a month helps strip the buildup. We also use Milbon treatments in the salon to restore tone and condition between full color appointments. If your color is shifting faster than it should, hard water is often the reason.
Wash Less, Fade Less
Every shampoo strips a little color. That is just how it works. If you are washing every day, you are fading your color faster than necessary.
Aim for two to three washes per week. Dry shampoo handles the in-between days. Your hair will actually look better for it. More body, more texture, more life in your color.
Sun and Chlorine: The Summer Problem
UV rays break down color molecules. Chlorine strips them. Saltwater dries hair out and makes it more porous, which means color escapes faster. If you are spending time at the pool or the Shore this summer, take a few precautions.
Wet your hair with clean water before you swim. Apply a leave-in conditioner. Rinse as soon as you get out. Wear a hat when you can. These small things add up.
Deep Conditioning Matters More Than You Think
Healthy hair holds color better. It is that simple. When your hair is dry and damaged, the cuticle stays open and color fades faster. A good deep conditioning mask once a week keeps the cuticle smooth and sealed, which keeps your color locked in.
You do not need a cabinet full of products. One solid mask, used consistently, makes a real difference. We recommend Milbon’s professional treatment line. It is what we use in the salon, and it delivers visible results without weighing hair down.
When to Come Back
This depends on what you had done. Single-process color usually needs a refresh every four to six weeks. Highlights and balayage can stretch eight to twelve weeks because the grow-out is softer and more intentional. Gray coverage tends to land in the four to six week range, depending on how fast your hair grows and how much contrast there is.
Book your next appointment before you leave. Not because we are trying to fill our books. Because the good time slots go fast, and you will thank yourself later.
A Gloss Between Appointments
If your color starts looking dull before your next full appointment, a gloss or toner refresh can bring it back. It takes less time, costs less, and extends the life of your color without a full service. It is one of the most underrated services we offer.
The Short Version
Sulfate-free shampoo. Lukewarm rinses. Fewer washes. Hard water protection. Sun and chlorine defense. Weekly deep conditioning. And book your next appointment before you need it.
That is it. No complicated routine. Just a few intentional habits that let your color do what it was meant to do: look beautiful, longer.
